Chivers Elected New VGCSA President

Keysborough Golf Club superintendent Brett Chivers has been elected the new president of the VGCSA following the state association’s annual general meeting at Yarra Yarra Golf Club (superintendent Paul Holmes) in late May. Chivers, who makes the move up from vice-president, takes over from outgoing president Michael Freeman (Huntingdale Golf Club) who was one of three members to step down from the committee at the AGM. Joining him were secretary Peter Jans and commiteeman Colin Foster. As a result the VGCSA heads into the next year with a vastly new-look line-up with no less than three new faces joining the committee. The full VGCSA committee is:

President: Brett Chivers (Keysborough GC)
Vice-president: Trevor U’ren (Devilbend GC)
Secretary: Jeremy Cutajar (Ringwood and Dorset GCs)
Treasurer: Nathan Bennett (The Sands, Torquay)
Committee: Colin Morrison (Flinders GC), Mark Jennings (Box Hill GC), Matt McLeod (Tocumwal GC) and Steve Hewitt (Thirteenth Beach)

Both Hewitt and McLeod celebrated their elevation to the committee in style by taking out the VGCSA’s coveted Powell Trophy (stroke) and Toro Cup (stableford) respectively, while Michael Grant from ITS topped the trade contingent to take home the Presidents Shield.

The other major announcement on the day was the bestowing of life membership status on departing Barwon Heads Golf Club superintendent Peter Frewin. The former VGCSA and AGCSA president finished up at the club last week after more than two decades and becomes the sixth life member of the VGCSA.
